Task 3 – Motion Graphics

For Task 3 I had to use Adobe After Affects and develop my knowledge of it to generate a sequence of no less than 20 seconds in which kinetic typography is used to accompany and enhance a soundtrack featuring voice. The soundtrack that I used was provided to us and it is pitch by Jordan Belfort in the Wolf of Wall Street movie. Here is  the transcript of the pitch:

“You schnooks will now be targeting the wealthiest one percent of Americans. I’m talking about whales here. Moby fucking Dicks. And with this script, which is now your new harpoon.

I’m gonna teach each and everyone of you to be Captain fucking Ahab. Get it? Huh?

Captain who?”

What is Motion Graphics?

Motion graphics are digital footage and/or animation technology to create the illusion of motion or rotation, and are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects. Motions graphics can be used in variety of mediums to create an illusion of motion. For example an illusion of motion can be added to a still image. An example of this could be a still image of snow and then and illusion motion of falling snow can be added using specif software such as Adobe After Affects.

What is Kinetic Typography?

In simple words kinetic typography can be perceived as a type of motion graphics as it is a type of art where text is expressed in animated form. Kinetic typography explores what affect time has on expression of animated text.

The Task

For my 3rd task I had to develop my Understanding of Adobe After Affects and produce a sequence of kinetic typography over a soundtrack.

There was a lot of challenges for me when using Adobe After Affects as I was not familiar with piece of software so I have used online tutorial to guide me through the task. I have started of with the task by finding the transcript of the pitch and inserted it into a text document. In Adobe After Affects I have inserted the Audio File and created a new composition. I have opened a wave form of the audio in the time line to see when the words start. I have made individual layers using text tool for every word so I can animate it separately. When I had all the words I have segmented my work so that one sentence appear at the time this was done using the time line and listening where the sentence start and finishes. Then using the bars of individual word layers dragging them to the point where the sentence finishes. I have done this for all the sentences. After that I have use the free select tool to move the words and put the into a composition. Because I have made other sentences to appear after the previous one other words have not distracted me. I have composed all the sentences and then started to animate the text. I have animated each word individually allowing the words to move in 3D space and transforming them on specific timing using key frames. This is how my project looks like:

As mentioned I did encountered quite a few challenges and there is a lot of place of improvement. My timing could be better because animated text is a bit delayed. Also I should consider better position as in some places You can see the word animation is not position successfully. Overall I am happy with my first outcome and I am looking forward in working with Adobe After Affects in the future.

Joiner Image, Long & Short Exposure Images.

Joiner Image

For Task 2 I was asked to create a joiner image in the style of David Hockney. As seen in my first blog post about this task I have done some research of who David Hockney is and researched his famous technique of Joiner Images. Myself have created few of these images to experiment with this technique.

For the first photograph I have used an online tool that create a photo collage from one image in the style of D. Hockney. I have used one of the picture I took in Belgium that had quite a lot of detail.  http://bighugelabs.com/hockney.php

This is the Outcome I’ve got from using the tool

This tool is great for someone who wants to see what could be a possible outcome of an image f it was shoot as Joiner Image. However this did not allowed me the explore David Hockney technique to I decide to make a small composition of items and shoot them from different angle and distance. When I had all the shoots I have used Photoshop software to combine them into a photo collage. I have created a transparent background and open all the images that I will use to make the collage.  have dragged each image individually to the background and using free transform tool I have scaled the image to desirable size. Each time I added a new image I dragged the layer to the bottom so that the image goes behind other images. This allowed me to combine individual images to make one joiner images of a Style of David Hockney. Here is my joiner image:

Long Exposure Photography

For long exposure photography I have choose light painting and  asked my sister to draw shapes when I was taking the photographs. I have made several shoot and I experimented with different duration of shutter speeds and different appearance of light. Here are my image of long exposure light painting.

First Attempt.

Second attempt got a more definite shape.

This one has quite straight lines was happy with the outcome.

In this photograph the light source was constantly blinking so it created a dotting affect.

Short Exposure Photography

For short exposure photography I have choose frozen motion and took photographs of running and dripping water and lighter ignition. I have also made an experiment with different light. I for this project I have used camera on manual mode. I have used flash so my shutter speed could not exceed 1/200 but I have also experimented with external source of light to see the outcome.

First picture taken of a running tap.

Started to experiment with running water from the glass to capture water dripping moment.

DSC_0143 DSC_0145

In this picture I experimented with different settings. I set my ISO to 1600 and set shutter speed to 1/2500. Using these setting allowed the camera to capture the image quickly and external source of light created an interesting affect. I am very pleased with this outcome. For me it looks like liquid aluminum although it is just water. Different settings can create a different affect and show how You can perceive things in the images.

Capturing the ignition of a lighter. I have used 1/200 shutter speed and flash for this. And I have to say it have took me a while to capture the perfect moment for me. I was to late or to early most of the time. One thing I could have done differently is I could have used ISO sensitivity instead of flash which would allowed me to raise shutter speed to more that 1/200 and the use series of fast shoots. The problem is that when You use flash You can not take series of shoots because flash does not refresh that fast.

First picture when in my opinion I timed correctly.

This one is blurry but the moment was right. DSC_0242

In my opinion this is the best timing I have done. You can see the ignition of the lighter very clearly and I really like how clear and sharp it looks.

Task 2 – Temporal Expression

Following task 2 I had to produce a number of photographs that explore long and short exposures. I have also had to create a Joiner image in the style of David Hockney.

What is long exposure photography?

Long exposure photography is using long duration shutter speed of the camera to capture sharply capture specific elements of an image. A good example of long exposure photography is light painting. Light painting involves using external source of light and drawing objects in the air while the shutter is triggered. A long duration shutter will continually captures the movement of the light until it is released and You will be able to see the shape You drawn in the picture. Usually light painting needs a dark environment to shoot but it is possible to do it in day light with a help of lens filters. Also the camera has to be still until the shutter is released to avoid blurry pictures. In the ideal situation the only thing moving shout be the external source of light. An example of light painting:

What is short exposure photography?

Short exposure photography is basically vice versa of long exposure photography. But instead of using long shutter speed it uses quick shutter speed and is used to capture different type of photographs such as dripping water. With short exposure photography You can capture action that happen really quick. For example without using short shutter speed You would no be able to capture running tap without getting blur on Your image. One of the types of short exposure photography is frozen motion. Frozen motion is used to freeze a specific second of a photograph. AN example could be ignition of a lighter. It happens very fast but using correct timing and light You will capture the sparks just before the fire light up. My self have experimented with this and I will show my images in the next blog post.

An Example of short exposure photography:

Task 2 – D. Hockney & Cubism

The Second Task of the Concept and Ideation Unit is about temporal expressions. To complete some this task I was set to perform some research about David Hockney and Cubism.

Cubism was one of the most influential visual art styles of the early twentieth century. It was created by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) and Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963) in Paris between 1907 and 1914. Cubism was an early 20th century movement in art especially painting. In Cubism a single viewpoint of a painting was abandoned and the painting was created in geometrical shapes. An very famous example would be from on of the main Starters of this Movement Pablo Picasso and his painting  Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907).

This painting is one of first thing that Marked the beginning of Cubism in 1907.

“Cubism is like standing at a certain point on a mountain and looking around. If you go higher, things will look different; if you go lower, again they will look different. It is a point of view.” – Jacques Lipchitz

David Hockney

English painter, printmaker, photographer and stage designer. Perhaps the most popular and versatile British artist of the 20th century. David Hockney is most famous of hos photo collage work. It have started in early 70s when Hockney started to take numerous shoots with a Polaroid camera of  still objectives, portraits or landscapes and combine them into photo collage later. Using this technique Hockney was experimenting with Pablo Picasso early stages of Cubism and he was interested of how we perceive space in three dimension. On of the great example of his photo collage or joiner image could be Pearblossom Highway, 11th-18th April 1986.

My Photo Alphabet

After performing some initial research I was ready to undertake the Task My Self. I took my Nikon D3100 DSLR camera and went to the Nature to look for letters.

There was a few challenges that I faced during this task. First challenge was that I saw everything as a fixed shapes. I did not think that I could look at the shapes from a different angle or frame my shoot to capture the letter shape. After I’ve done a few shoot and got the first letters I understood that my view has to adjust a bit in order to fulfill the potential of the surrounding shapes.

The second challenge was that I was not able to find some of the letters outside. I found that with more complicating letter that have more curves than others. For example letter S was complicating to find outside so I looked for it at home and found it.  I understood from this that some of the shapes are much easier to find in the inside environment although it is still possible to find them outside as well.

An example of this could be that I thought I will never find letter G in the nature however I did but it is not very clear although You can still see it.

I have learned from this task that it is a lot about perspective of how You see things. It requires time and consideration whether a possible shape can be seen in the shoot you are about to take. That is why this task was good to train my “photographers-eye” and make my views of the surrounding a bit different.

After I had took shoots of all the letters  of English Alphabet I had to combine them into one poster Display. I have used Photoshop Software to combine Imagines into a poster display. Before I made the collage I have drawn a sketch to determine of how it should look like.

A decide to stick to a simple theme. For the collage I have create a white background Layer in Photoshop (size of a A3 paper). The to add individual images I have opened them separately and dragged them on to the background layer. A dragged imaged created a new layer and using a free transform tool I have scaled the image into desirable size and framed it it to the right position. I have done the same technique for all the pictures. When all the pictures were in place  have use Text tool to add a key above the picture to indicate what letter it is. Here is My completed Photo Alphabet Poster Display:

Task 1 – Photo Alphabet

As the fist task for Concept and Ideation unit I had to look for naturally occurring shapes. The shapes I had to look for where letter of the alphabet. Before I jumped right into the task I have performed some research to find out how other photographers do it.

While performing my research I have came across a website where You can input a word and the website will generate the word from pictures that have letter shapes in them.  This website gave me a clear understanding of how to undertake my task and how letters can be found as naturally occurring shapes.

Website: http://www.alphabetphotography.com/

I have also looked at some photo collages made where all the letter are combined into one collage. This gave me an understanding of how the pictures can be presented into one poster display. This is some of the work I have found by other photographers:

Performing some initial research allowed me to understand the task better and things I have to complete for this task. The task it self aim to train students “photographers-eye” and while undertaking this task I can clearly understand why it does so.

Final Website

Out team have finished the Bored in Bournemouth Website application. Here is how it looks like and what the pages do:

Register and Log in Page

In this page the user can register and the log in to our page to access information. After registering the user is redirected to this page to log in.

Day Out Page

In this page The user can find Active, Social, Shopping and Cultural day out’s. Each type Consist of three suggestions made by website administrators.

About Page

About page consist information about our project and what we do. It also have links to Our personal blog’s and Project Dokuwiki.

Contact Page

In this page the users can contact us with questions they have. Request information is Name, email address and the message they want to send us.

Meet The Team Page

Meet the team page has the information about ourselves and who we are.

Submit Your Day Out page

Submit your day Out page is one of the most important pages of website application. Here users can submit their day out by inputting name, description, location and the rating of the activity.

My Team and myself is happy with the overall results we achieved with our website application. Considering that this was the first project we made that requires database we did quite well. The users are able to register and log in to our application also submit their day outs as well as view day out’s suggested by us. The information saves to the MySQL database which proves that the database works. We have encountered a few issues with the website application but we believe that is normal as all of us are new comers to this area.

In this blog post I will explain some of the important HTML code used in our project. I will outline what it does and what we use it for.

Index page

Index page is one of the most important pages in our website. The HTML code used for this page is to create a Register Form and a Log in Form which is the first thing that appears for the user when he enters the website. In previous post with discussed hot PHP script allows the page to do something so this HTML code is as well injected with PHP. If it was just HTML the log in and register forms would not work and the page would just submit to itself . There is also log in and register buttons created.

Submit Day Out page

This HTML code is also used to create a form fo day out submission. The codes consists of having 4 different text fields and one numeric field. The 4 text fields are used for name, description, location and the numeric field is used to give the day out a rating from 1 to 5.  There is also a submit button created.  As well as index page this page also has PHP so that it does not submit to it self and the data is authenticated and send to the database. This Page also contains code that create a box with the information every time a new day out is added. This looks more organized than having plain text on plain background.

Day Out Page

Day out page HTML code is quite simple as it only consist of different <div> to sort out the day out’s we suggest to the user. The Page creates a top title with the type of the day and then 3 day out suggestion follows bellow it with all the information. Day out’s are stored in individual boxes to keep the information clear and easy to read. These boxes are created using CSS class=”day-box”.

PHP My Admin

phpMyAdmin is software tool that is free. It’s written in PHP and handles the administration of MySQL over the WEB. phpMyAdmin handle operations such as managing databases, tables, columns, relations, users, permissions etc. In phpMyAdmin these actions can be performed through user interface without a need to directly execute SQL statement.

For Our project “Bored in Bournemouth” we had to create 2 tables in phpMyAdmin. First One that manages the data and the relation between register and logged in users and the second one for “submit your day out” page which stores the information in the database about what day out the registered user submitted.

User Table

The User table created consisted of 5 entities which are:

  • User ID – In Auto increment so that all users are unique (which starts from 0 an goes up )
  • User name – Varchar(255) can consist letter and numbers no more that 255 characters. User can input a username he wants as long as it is not taken.
  • Password – Varchar (255). User chooses a password.
  • Email – Varchar (255). User inputs his email address.
  • Date Joined – Give a date stamp in the database when the user have registered

Submit your day out FORM

The User table created consisted of 6 entities which are:

  • ID – In Auto increment so that all day out are unique (which starts from 0 an goes up )
  • User name – Varchar(255) can consist letter and numbers no more that 255 characters. For Authentication that the user is logged in.
  • Name –  Varchar(255) User insert the name of the day out.
  • Description- Text. User inserts the description of the day out.
  • Location – Text. User inserts the location of the day out.
  • Rating – Int. User gives a rating value for the day out from 1 to 5.
